Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a progressive dementia (general term for memory loss) that starts with mild memory loss and eventually interfering with daily life tasks. Commonly the onset is above 60years of age. Language, memory and thought processes get affected due to changes in the brain structure. Having Alzheimer’s disease is not a normal part of aging.

Loss of memory can be the first warning sign of cognitive decline. Difficulty in completing familiar everyday tasks, repeating or not focusing on questions, misplacing things, behavioral and mood changes, difficulty in speaking, confusion about events etc can develop as the severity progresses.
Though there is no known cure for AD, medical management can improve the quality of life for persons with AD and their caregivers.

Positive support for cognitive-linguistic deficits, attention, memory and pragmatics can be provided by Speech language Pathologist. Some techniques to improve their communicative instances include
· Make use of memory aids or create a memory book: identify important names, places and other relevant information and store them in books or diaries.
· Identify questions to ask and wait for the response patiently or guide them to a response.
· Make use of visual reminders like calendars, clocks, pictures etc.
· Help them reminiscence: make them talk about their interests, hobbies and daily activities and important events in their life.
· Plan activities that centered around their areas of interest
Caring for a love done with Alzheimer’s disease can be a heartbreaking task with constant challenges. Personal sacrifices are often required. Positive and good communication skills will enhance the quality of life of your loved ones.
· Get the persons attention before communication
· Relay the message in short and clear sentences
· Ask simple questions
· Break down tasks into manageable easy steps
· Respond with affection and love

Alzheimer’s disease is progressive and can slowly wear down a person and strain family relationships. But with the right guidance and support for both the patient and the caregiver, strides can be made to improve the overall quality of life and ease everyday tasks.
